The talker of the day: Could anyone get Kim Kardashian’s behind without Photoshop or cosmetic enhancement or some crazy workout scheme?
This comes up (again) because of arresting pictures of her butt — wide, naked, oiled and perky enough to hold a Champagne glass — that appeared online in Paper magazine on Wednesday and immediately flew around the Internet, accompanied by many typed exclamations of “OMG!”
Just as quickly, they were followed by suspicions that the images were Photoshopped or manipulated.
Then cosmetic surgeons weighed in, saying they could enhance a butt to look like that (only $5,000 in North Carolina, $10,000 in Miami).
“Without a doubt she had something done, probably two Brazilian butt lifts,” says John Zannis, head of the Zannis Center for Plastic Surgery in New Bern, N.C., who says Brazilians are increasingly popular and he does several every month.
It involves liposuctioning the torso, abdomen, flanks, love handles, back and lower back, then filtering and purifying the fat, then injecting it directly into the buttocks.
“Right into the the muscle,” he says. “You sculpt it. Mark it out so it doesn’t end up low and droopy…It’s completely round and firm and feels hard. And then softens up within a few weeks. Then it feels like a regular behind.”
Maybe this all seems familiar? Kardashian has shown off various body parts in photographs, staged or snapped, for years. Very little of her has gone unseen. Remember, her “career” got started with a sex tape. She posed in the nude for Playboy in 2007 and last year said she would pose again to show off her pride in her post-baby body.
And don’t forget her famous “butt X-ray,” when she underwent a scan for Keeping Up With the Kardashians in 2011 to show critics that she did not have silicone implants in her already famously ample derriere.
But these latest images were jaw-dropping. They show a naked Kardashian from behind, with an impossibly narrow waist set off by a wide behind. And all of it was oiled to a fare-thee-well, making her back and buttocks look like a shiny ski slope.
“Just oil and great lighting,” her longtime makeup artist, Mario Dedivanovic, told E! News. “The makeup was actually really quick. It took about 20 minutes because the hair took so long.”
In the other image she’s actually clothed but balancing a Champagne glass on her shelf of a behind. It was a deliberate attempt by French photographer Jean-Paul Goude to recreate a similar image he shot years ago and, as Paper put it, “break the Internet.”
The pictures were so freakish, many people suspected the naked image was manipulated or Photoshopped — something magazines have been called out for repeatedly over the years in publishing images of celebrities that fail to conform to reality.
New York plastic surgeon Ramtin Kassir says Kardashian looks curvy and “your eye likes curves,” plus big butts are popular these days.
“I still think the photo has been Photoshopped,” he says. “People aren’t born like that. She has probably had at least one or two procedures. You can see it in pictures of Kim over the years. She had kind of a curvy full-butt figure, but it has definitely been enhanced. People are going to want this butt now.”
Jym Wilson, a photo editor at USA TODAY, says the picture looks manipulated, and any high-school amateur could have done it.
“They’ve cut away a bunch of her real back (on the right side of her waist) and cloned in some of this backdrop,” he says.
He says it’s a “unicorn” picture: The top half is really her. “Then they took a picture of her butt up close and bigger,” he says. “Then they put the two together.”
Senior editors at Paper did not return messages, but editorial director Mickey Boardman told Yahoo Style: “[There was] much less [retouching] than people think. That’s really what she looks like. That’s her. I would say it’s the normal amount of retouching that’s on a normal cover. ”
What about working out? Alas, you probably can’t get this bum from working out alone, unless you’re genetically predisposed to having a large behind, says Lani Muelrath, a San Francisco-based fitness expert and author of Fit Quickies.
“But there is a lot you can do to shape a flat backside,” with exercises “specifically targeted to gluteals,” she says. The result: “A round and peach-like backside.”
But she says Kardashian looks the way she does because she has a very long waist.
“She has many inches between her rib cage and her hips which gives her an exaggerated small waist and makes her hips and backside look bigger,” says Muelrath.
